The Jungle Book 50th Anniversary – Bear Necessities

On October 18, 1967, Disney’s The Jungle Book was released to the world. It would be many years before I would see it as a young 90’s kid, but it would pack a heavy punch and leave quite an impression on my nostalgic memory. To this day, this is one of my favorite animated films, and the song – “Bear Necessities” – is surely the standout of the soundtrack.

In honor of this film’s 50th,  please enjoy my rendition below of “Bear Necessities”, written by Terry Gilkyson and originally performed for the film by Phil Harris (Baloo) and Bruce Reitherman (Mowgli). Theirs remains a perfect version. If you have never heard it, you’re a liar.

  1. Very good. Andre enjoyed it. My mom (your grandmother) took Aunt Kathy and I to see it shortly after it came out. The day after Thanksgiving as I recall. I was eleven. We loved it, had the album soon after, and played it and sang along until it went through the vinyl. There were no dvds or cable channels then, so we had to go back to the theater and see it a couple more times. We also have some dvds of you dancing to it when you were little. Good memories.
